As home computers became more and more popular in the 1980s, the entertainment industry slowley expanded, bringing pixel art with it. Computer games were big on gameplay but no way as graphically impressive as the games we see today.

What was required were artists that could work with extremely low resolutions and a limited colour palette, and who could produce impressive results from very limited systems (Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, etc). This area is dedicated just to that and to pixelated art.
